The Hire United guide

Good questions.
Clear answers.

From finding the right machine to understanding who you are hiring from, here is what you need to know about our network of independent tool and plant hire businesses.

Everything in one place

Find the answer, then get on with the job.

Every member runs their own independent hire business, so prices, availability and hire arrangements are confirmed by the company you choose. These answers explain how the network works and what to ask when you get in touch.

01 / THE BENEFITS

Why choose a Hire United member?

Local knowledge and personal service, connected to a wider UK network.

Why should I hire from a Hire United member?

You deal with an independent hire business that knows its equipment, its local area and the people it serves. Hire United connects those businesses across the UK, giving you local support with access to a broader network when a job calls for it.

What is the advantage over a large national hire company?

You can speak directly to a local team with practical knowledge of the machines they supply. You still benefit from the reach of a UK network, while your hire is handled by the independent business serving you.

Can a member help me choose the right machine?

Yes. Tell them what you need to do, where the work is taking place and any access or site restrictions. They can talk through suitable equipment, attachments and practical considerations before you book.

Do you help both trade customers and DIY hirers?

Yes. Members support construction and trade customers as well as people tackling projects at home. Equipment ranges and hire requirements vary by depot, so contact your local member with the details of your job.

Can you help with jobs in more than one part of the UK?

Hire United members operate across the UK and work together as a network. If your business has projects in different areas, a member can help you identify suitable local contacts for each location.

02 / THE NETWORK

Who is Hire United?

Independent businesses working together to offer customers a better choice.

What exactly is Hire United?

Hire United is a network of independent tool and plant hire companies. Members run their own businesses and depots, while working together to share expertise, support one another and help customers find equipment around the UK.

Is Hire United itself a hire depot?

No. Equipment is hired from an individual member business. Hire United brings the members together and helps you find the right company to speak to.

Are Hire United members all part of one company?

No. Each member remains an independent business with its own team, fleet, prices, terms and customer relationships. The network connects them without taking away that independence.

Where can I find your members?

Visit our members page to meet the companies in the network, or use the locations page to find a depot serving your area.

Do I contact Hire United HQ to book equipment?

The quickest route is to contact a member directly. Their hire desk can confirm the equipment, availability, price and delivery arrangements. For questions about Hire United as an organisation, use our contact page.

03 / WHO SUPPLIES IT

Who supplies the equipment?

A straightforward answer to who provides the machine, the hire and the support.

Who actually supplies my hired equipment?

The member company handling your booking supplies the equipment and confirms the hire with you. You will know which business you are dealing with before the hire begins.

Does Hire United own the machines?

Hire United is the network, not the company hiring a machine to you. Member businesses operate their own fleets and hire arrangements. Your chosen member will explain exactly what is being supplied for your job.

Who provides the quote and invoice?

The member you book with provides the quote, confirms any charges and handles the invoice. Ask them to include the hire period, transport, fuel, accessories and any other applicable costs so you have the full picture.

Who do I contact if I need help during the hire?

Contact the member shown on your hire paperwork. Their team is your first point of contact for operating questions, changes, faults and collection arrangements.

Do equipment manufacturers or suppliers hire to me through Hire United?

Your hire is arranged with a Hire United member, not with the manufacturer. The network also works with industry suppliers to support its members, but your chosen member remains your contact for the hire.

04 / WHAT YOU CAN HIRE

Equipment and jobs

From a small home project to a demanding construction site.

What types of equipment can I hire?

Across the network you can find tools and plant for digging, lifting, access, groundwork, concreting, landscaping, cleaning, power and much more. Explore the categories and jobs on our What We Hire page. The range available at each depot will differ.

Do members hire small tools as well as large plant?

Yes. Depending on the member, that could mean a drill, breaker, mixer or pressure washer, through to excavators, dumpers, access equipment, telehandlers and site power. Ask your local depot about the particular item you need.

I know the job but not the machine. Can you still help?

Absolutely. Explain the work, the ground or surface, available space, access width, working height and any power requirements. Your local member can suggest suitable options and explain the differences between them.

Can I hire attachments and accessories too?

Many members offer attachments and associated equipment. Tell the hire desk what you need the main machine to do so they can check compatibility and include the right accessories in your quote.

Can I see whether a particular machine is available online?

The website shows the types of equipment available across the network. For live availability, specification and pricing, contact the member who will supply your hire.

Can I hire equipment for a home or garden project?

Yes. Members can help with many DIY, home improvement and garden jobs. The What We Hire page is a useful starting point, and a local hire desk can help you choose a manageable machine for the space and work involved.

05 / ARRANGING A HIRE

Booking and delivery

The practical details to discuss before the equipment arrives.

How do I book a machine or tool?

Find a local depot and contact its hire desk directly. Describe the work, the delivery location and when you need the equipment. The member will confirm availability, price and the next steps.

Can the equipment be delivered to my site or home?

Members can advise on delivery to your location. Tell them the full address, postcode, access arrangements and any delivery restrictions. Transport options and charges are confirmed by the member supplying the equipment.

Can I collect equipment instead?

Collection may be possible for suitable items. Check with the member first, including the size and weight of the equipment and what vehicle or trailer is required to carry it safely.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can, particularly for specialist machines or a fixed delivery date. If you need something quickly, call your local member. They can tell you what is available and discuss alternatives.

Do you offer a site visit before hire?

If the choice depends on access, ground conditions, height or another site detail, ask your member whether a site visit or further assessment would help. They will explain what support they can provide for your particular job.

How much does it cost to hire equipment?

Prices depend on the equipment, hire period, location and services required. Each member sets its own rates. Ask for a quote that sets out the machine, delivery or collection, fuel, damage arrangements and any applicable extras.

06 / ON THE JOB

During your hire

Useful answers about operation, changes, protection and support.

What if the equipment develops a fault?

Stop using it if it appears unsafe and contact the supplying member using the details on your hire paperwork. Explain what happened and follow their advice. Their team will discuss the appropriate next step with you.

Can I extend my hire?

Contact the supplying member before the agreed end of the hire. They can check the machine's next booking and confirm whether an extension is possible and what it will cost.

Who arranges collection when the job is finished?

Contact your supplying member to arrange off-hire or collection in line with their terms. Do not assume the hire has ended simply because the equipment is no longer in use. Your member will confirm the process and timing.

Is insurance or damage protection included?

Arrangements vary by member and by equipment. Ask the hire desk what cover is required, what options they offer and what exclusions or excesses apply. Make sure you understand the position before confirming the booking.

Do I need training or a licence to use the equipment?

Some equipment requires specific training or a suitably competent operator. Tell the member who will be using the machine and where it will be used. They can explain their hire requirements and any relevant operator documentation.

Where can I find the hire terms and conditions?

The member supplying your equipment will provide its own hire terms and conditions. Ask for a copy when requesting a quote and check the hire period, damage responsibilities, fuel, transport and off-hire procedure.

07 / FOR HIRE BUSINESSES

Thinking of joining?

A few answers for independent hire companies interested in the network.

Who can become a Hire United member?

Hire United brings together established, independent tool and plant hire businesses that operate their own fleets and share the network's commitment to quality and cooperation. Membership is considered carefully by the existing members.

Would my company remain independent?

Yes. Members retain control of their own businesses, fleets, pricing and day-to-day decisions. The network creates opportunities to collaborate while each company keeps its own identity.

How do I enquire about membership?

Read more on the Join Hire United page, then get in touch with Hire United HQ through the contact page. We can explain the membership process and whether there is a suitable opportunity in your area.
